clear Technology (CDTN) of the Brazilian National Nuclear Energy Commissio
n (CNE) has been active in performing tracer studies for about four decade
 s. Both radioactive and stable isotopes\, artificial and natural radiotrac
ers\, as well as fluorescent dyes have been used. Studies of transport in
industrial systems and in the environment (mainly in hydrological systems)
have been carried out. This activity started in the late sixties of las
t century with the measurement of sediment transport in harbors and channe
ls. Most of the work has been connected with field applications to polluti
on and contamination problems. Lately we have started the application of r
adiotracers to studies of water movement in oil field\, which required an
analytical upgrade in our facilities. Besides we have started seven years
ago a Graduate Course at CDTN which opens new perspectives for research an
d cooperation on this subject\, as well as many challenges regarding the e
ducation and inception of young students in these investigations. The talk
will be about of some of these past\, present and planned activities.
