Beschreibung
Eukaryotic cells exhibit a wide assortment of specialized functions, both individually and as the building blocks of tissues. Implementation of many of these functions frequently involves rearrangement of cellular structures, and polarized redistribution of organelles. In animal cells the nucleus is typically the largest organelle yet it is often repositioned, sometimes quite dramatically so, during the differentiation of diverse cell types including neurons, epithelial cells and myocytes. Nuclei are also actively repositioned during cell migration as well during mitosis in many cell types. Some of the mechanisms that direct nuclear positioning have now been identified, providing new insight into how the nucleus physically interacts with other cellular components. Remarkably, some of the same molecules are actually involved in the rearrangement of nuclear content evident during meiosis. These studies have also highlighted the role of the nucleus as a focal centre for the disemination of mechanical forces throughout the cell to the plasma membrane and beyond. This talk will provide a summary of what we know about the mechanics of nuclear positioning and some of the evolving methods that we now have available to study this phenomenon
