SUMMARY:Korinek: Molecular and cellular bases of tissue homeostasis and tum
 or transformation in the intestine
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Vladimir Korinek\nInstitute of Speaker: IMG\, Prague\,
  Czech Republic\nTopics:\nBiologie\n Location:\n Name: MPI-CBG (MPI-CBG A
uditorium (big half))\n Street: Pfotenhauerstraße 108\n City: 01307 Dre
 sden\n Phone: +49 351 210-0\n Fax: +49 351 210-2000\nDescription: The bo
dy of a multi-cellular organism is a highly organized structure of cells\,
tissues and organs. The Wnt pathway\, initiated by secreted Wnt proteins\
, controls a remarkably diverse array of processes that include cell proli
feration\, differentiation\, cell migration\, and cell polarity. The epith
elial lining of the intestine represents one of the most intensively self-
replenishing organs in mammals. With a rate of entire renewal every 3-5 da
ys\, this dynamic and organized cell turnover represents an attractive par
adigm for tissue maintenance studies. The scientific focus of our laborato
ry is related to the molecular mechanisms regulating the Wnt pathway outpu
t in the intestine. We employ genetically modified mouse models as the mai
n methodological approach. The presentation is dedicated to the functional
studies of the Troy and Msx1 genes that were identified as the Wnt pathwa
y target genes in the intestine. In addition\, the current concept of mole
cular mechanisms driving cell renewal and tumor transformation of the inte
 stinal epithelium will be presented.
