- Beschreibung
- Topological Insulators are a new class of materials displaying protected gapless boundary states. I will discuss the effect of the curvature of the surface of a Topological Insulator and of the possible presence of a topological defect like a lattice dislocation, in the continuum, long wavelength, limit. A spin connection term shows up in the Dirac-like dispersion of the boundary states, in addition to the rotation of the Dirac matrices. Localized perturbing potentials like a bump in the surface or a lattice defect imply a cross-section for the electron and induce resistivity, which we have calculated within the Born approximation. I will also discuss under which conditions a vortex line piercing a Topological Superconductor sustains a Majorana bound state localized at the boundary. Majorana fermions are expected to be quite an interesting option for future quantum information protocols.
