AbstractA major difference between individual cells and a multicellular aggregate (or tissue) is the presence of an intercellular space. This space is filled by extracellular matrix and interstitial fluid. Thus, a biological tissue can be described as a three-phases composite and poroelastic material. Its rheological response to a mechanical perturbation emerges from the coexistence of the different phases. Interestingly, the compression of the intercellular space also induces a biological response, with changes in cell migration, morphology and proliferation.
