- Beschreibung
- Perceptions of morphogenesis are dominated by two ideas: local growth by cell proliferation and epithelial bending by active cell shape change, especially apical constriction. Examination of ectodermal organs, including teeth, salivary glands, hair follicles and mammary glands, reveals that other cell behaviours drive their formation. In particular, active cell migration and rearrangement are the active processes early on, while at later stages active basal constriction is required, overturning previous models implicating proliferation-driven morphogenesis. A systematic, quantitative analytical framework for morphogenesis is proposed.
