Single atom counting by means of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) is an ultra-sensitive and versatile tool applicable to many research questions; from archeology and geology over environmental research to fundamental physics.

AMS contributes critical experimental input to the field of nuclear astrophysics.
Neutron capture and charged particle reaction cross-sections of long-lived products can be determined by a combination of activation at stellar energies and atom-counting.
The search for interstellar radionuclides from nearby stellar explosions yielded the discovery of two distinct influxes of freshly synthesized Fe-60 from
core-collapse supernovae to Earth within the last 10 Myr. Furthermore, a low influx of Fe-60 within the last 20 years was discovered in Antarctic snow.
These discoveries shed light on the origin of the solar neighborhood and the impact of supernovae to Earths habitability.

There are copious experimental indications for the phenomenon of an additional presence of non-luminous gravitationally interacting matter, summarized as dark matter. So far, only the DAMA/LIBRA experiment claimed the detection of dark matter. Almost any dark matter experiment requires a low-radioactivity environment as well as low-level detector materials. One of the most critical radionuclide interfering with the measurement of dark matter is Pb-210 with a half-life of 22.2 yr. We are currently developing a low-level Pb-210 AMS capability to characterize materials for low-level experiments such as the new Sodium Iodide with Active Background Rejection (SABRE) experiment.
