- In this talk, I will provide an overview of the crystal growth activities on quantum materials in my lab at IISER Pune. Over the past five years, our research has focused on several contemporary topics, including quantum criticality in pyrochlore iridates, charge- and spin-stripe order in rare-earth nickelates, and magnetism in triangular lattice perovskites and rare-earth-based van der Waals halides. From these, I have selected three topics for a more detailed presentation: (a) RX₃ (R = rare-earth, X = Cl, I) [1, 2], which are structurally analogous to RuCl₃ and relatively unexplored. These materials are posited as proximate Kitaev systems, with YbCl₃ showing quantum critical Bose-Einstein condensation in the 2D limit [3]; (b) the triangular lattice compound Ca₃NiNb₂O₉, comprising well-isolated triangular layers of Ni (spin 1), which undergo a two-step antiferromagnetic ordering into a 120° ground state [4]; and (c) evidence of electron-phonon coupling in the charge-transfer insulator and van der Waals material NiPS₃ [5].
