- Non-relativistic condensed matter breaks the charge conjugation symmetry, C, of relativistic quantum fields. Nonetheless, for half-filled bands a close analog may emerge, namely particle-hole symmetry, K. The two symmetry operations C and K are similar in that they transform any excitation of energy E and charge Q to another excitation with the same energy E but the opposite charge -Q; they differ in that charge conjugation is a unitary operation, whereas particle-hole symmetries are anti-unitary. After reviewing the notion of symmetries in quantum mechanics and some background material from many-body theory, this colloquium talk highlights a few examples of particle-hole symmetries in condensed matter, foremost the spectacular case of the half-filled lowest Landau level.
