- One of the major challenges in quantum information processing is that photons do not interact. One possible way to overcome this limitation is to mediate photon-photon interaction by material systems. In this talk, I will discuss a solid state implementation, namely the light-matter interaction in a quantum dot – cavity system. The efficient absorption of single photon pulses and the quantum dot exciton is a crucial prerequisite in order to obtain optical nonlinearities useful for quantum communication processing. The solid state solution offers two possible mechanisms to control the light-matter interaction: dynamic Stark tuning of the exciton energies and dynamic tuning of the quality factor of the cavity. Both can serve as tools towards quantum state transfer and quantum gates. In the last part I will present an experimental approach to tune the quality factor of a photonic crystal cavity intended for controlling the spontaneous emission enhancement of quantum dots in the cavity.
