The information available to scientists and evaluation agents is increasing at an exponential rate. This poses tremendous challenges to scientists who have to decide what to read or browse and to evaluators who have to evaluate individuals or a body of research. In this talk I will present two large scale analysis of citations data. In the first part, I will show that articles in papers accumulate citations at rates that depend on the journal and that this has a large impact on current standards accumulate citations and propose an alternative ranking for scientific journals. In the second part, I will show how a large scale analysis of publication records of faculty in tip universities in the US can help us uncover the differences in research practices between male and female academics.
