SUMMARY:Mohan: Implications of Storage Class Memories on Software and Hardw
 are Architectures
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. C. Mohan\nInstitute of Speaker: IBM Fellow and For
mer IBM India Chief Scientist\nTopics:\nInformatik\, Elektro- u. Informati
onstechnik\n Location:\n Name: TUD Andreas-Pfitzmann-Bau (Lecture Hall IN
 F E023 (Computer Science Faculty\, TUD))\n Street: Nöthnitzer Straße 46
 \n City: 01069 Dresden\n Phone: \n Fax: \nDescription: Flash memories h
ave been in widespread usage for a while but they have had some performanc
e and reliability problems which have made them unsuitable for long term s
torage of traditional database data. A new class of memory called Storage
Class Memories (SCMs) are emerging which are built using different technol
ogies than flash devices. SCMs fall in between DRAM and traditional disk s
 torage along many dimensions (performance\, cost\, energy usage\, ....). A
s a result\, large SCM-based memory systems will be built. SCMs will permi
t the sizes of databases managed by MMDBMSs to be very large while being c
heaper than those using only DRAM. SCMs may be viewed as disks or as memor
y from an architectural perspective. Depending on the viewpoint\, the impl
ications on DBMS architectures will be very different. In IBM Research\,
we have been working on multiple projects to understand the implications o
f SCMs on software and hardware architectures in general and on DBMS archi
tectures in particular. Traditional locking\, recovery\, storage managemen
t and query processing ideas would need to be extended to take advantage o
f SCMs. In this talk\, Mohan will discuss what he has learnt from his inve
stigations and what needs to be further explored. This talk should be of i
nterest to hardware\, software\, systems and storage people both in indust
 ry and academia.
