 the backbone approach of cancer treatment is often   impeded by tumor radi
 oresistance. Recent evidences suggest a small cell population   called can
 cer stem cells (CSC)\, which is resistant to conventional therapy includin
 g   radiotherapy leading to tumor recurrence.    Our data suggest a combin
 ation of cancer stem cell markers for identification of radioresistant  ce
 ll population. Irradiation of cancer cells increased the progenitor popula
 tion that can be   defined by classical stem cell markers including ALDH a
 ctivity\, CXCR4\, CD133\, ABCG2\, and   led to activation of PI3K/AKT and 
 epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) signaling pathways.    Further aim
 ed studies will explore the role of cancer progenitors in development of  
  radioresistance and examine the predictive value of cancer stem cell mark
 ers on tumors   radiocurability.
