terms of a finite\, strongly interacting quantum mechanical system coupled
to a weakly interacting extended one\, where the former has a discrete sp
ectrum\, while the latter is characterized by a continuum of energy levels
occur in many different areas of physics. These systems are commonly call
ed quantum impurity systems. Quite generally\, the dichotomy between local
ized and extended states in these systems gives rise to a variety of possi
ble behaviors and to highly non-trivial fixed points and rich universal ph
ysics. This international workshop will bring together researchers from a
broad range of areas to which quantum impurity physics is essential. It w
ill cover the recent achievements and aims at generating a cross-fertiliza
tion among the various fields. The workshop is preceded by an Advanced Sch
ool that will be open to PhD students and young postdocs. During the schoo
l week\, leading experts will give introductory lectures to various theore
tical and experimental aspects pertinent to quantum impurity physics. ICAM
travel awards are available for eligible candidates.
