Demographic and social changes have increased thenumber ofelderly people living alone. Many of these need continuousmedical assistance, yet it is not sustainable to have dedicatedmedical professionalfor each of them. Accordingly, automated support hasbeen proposed, in particular, Body Area Network, in which a persongoes abouthis or her daily activities at home or outdoors, butwears sensorsmonitoring vital signs and providing emergency detectionand prevention. Such systems have to strike a balance betweenconflicting requirements, such as availability and reliability, e.g., if aperson iswell, not all sensors need to be active and working at thehighest samplingrate; on the other hand, if he or she falls or has a stroke, theopposite must happen with the sensors. We explore how Dynamic Software Product Line (DSPL) achieve this goal. Accordingly, aDSPL reconfiguresitself based on some context change e.g., thepersons‘ medicalsituation, to meet a new and more suitable quality goalfor thatnew situation, as specified by a reliability contract providedby thedomain expert (a medical doctor). This contract is modeled asa statemachine, whose transitions are medical events (e.g.,fall, stroke) and states are target reliability goals, promptingare configurationto meet it. The quality of any given configurationis measuredby a single function over the features of the DSPLand relatedquality information. This function is derived froma parametricdiscrete time Markov chain model representingthe reliabilityof the DSPL. Further, this function relies on anormalized formof the feature model based on optional features. Weanalyze achievedexpressiveness as well as time and space complexity issues.
