- Despite of more than 20 years of intense research the relevance of spin fluctuations and phonons for the pairing mechanism and the low-energy properties of high-temperature superconductors is presently rather controversially discussed. In this talk I review the status of this discussion and contrast both mechanisms which should leave fingerprints in the elementary excitations that can be compared with experiment. For example, a spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing leads to (a) strong kinks in the electronic dispersion, (b) to a resonance (feedback) excitation in the spin susceptibility, and (c) straightforward to d-wave pairing. On the other hand, for the phonon case, one finds that the contribution of the electron-phonon interaction for d-wave pairing λd is one order of magnitude smaller than the already small isotropic s-wave channel λs. Finally, I draw an outlook on future key experiments to search for the pairing mechanism.
