- Beschreibung
- Amorphous solids are prototypes of disordered non-equilibrium quantum systems. At ultra-low temperatures the physics of such glassy materials is govern by atomic tunneling systems and their interaction with other degrees of freedom, like phonons, nuclear moments or conduction electrons. The detailed understanding of such systems is of general interest not only from a fundamental point of view but also impacts many novel applications like solid state qubits, nano-mechanical oscillators, or superconducting amplifiers working at the quantum limit. In recent years we have investigated the dynamics and the yet unknown microscopic nature of atomic tunneling systems in both dielectric and metallic glasses. We will present the main findings of these experiments and will discuss them in the framework of the standard tunneling model. In particular, we will show that the dynamics and the level structure of atomic tunneling systems are far more complex than believed so far. Furthermore we will demonstrate that nuclear spins can be used to reveal the microscopic nature of the tunneling systems and thus solving a long standing puzzle regarding the physics of amorphous solids.
