w biology—ranging from advances in the understanding of the role of RNA
to new approaches to genome editing—presents an explosion of opportunity
for therapeutic intervention. Realizing this potential involves traversi
ng biological barriers at the cellular\, tissue\, and organismal levels.
Successes to date include those based on RNAi\, targeting\, and intracellu
lar delivery of peptides. Though significant\, these illustrate the compl
exity of the challenge biological barriers pose\, and the need to move fro
m biologically inspired to “biologically informed” delivery systems.
Illustrations for integrating more sophisticated biological techniques inc
lude advanced imaging\, molecular profiling\, and pharmacological tools\,
in addition to the use of engineered tissue and animal models. Interdisci
plinary approaches based on the nexus of advanced biological tools and mol
ecular engineering comprise a new frontier of exploration with unprecedent
ed potential for positive impact to human health.
