 cal insulators are characterized by symmetry-protected gapless boundary st
 ates. Particularly interesting are three-dimensional topological insulator
 s\, whose electromagnetic response features a topological magnetoelectric 
 effect\, which is closely related to the so-called chiral     anomaly
  in relativistic quantum field theories. In the context of solid state phy
 sics the chiral anomaly arises as a second-quantized version of the Berry 
 phase induced by the electromagnetic response of   topological insulato
 rs. This property plays an important role in heterostructures involving bo
 th topological insulators and magnetic materials. In this talk we will con
 sider theoretical and experimental aspects of bilayer and trilayer structu
 res of the form FM/TI and FM/TI/FM (FM=Ferromagnet\, TI=Topological Insula
 tor) using a quantum-field theoretic approach. The paradigmatic experiment
 al example to be discussed is one in which FM=EuS and TI=Bi2Se3.</p> <p><s
