- Description
- Combining density functional theory (DFT) and embedded dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) methods, we study the metal-insulator transition in R2Ir2O7 (R=Y, Eu, Sm, Nd, Pr, and Bi) and the topological nature of the insulating compounds. Based on accurate free energies obtained using the DFT+DMFT methods, we found that both band width and more importantly quantum fluctuations play an important role in metal-insulator transitions. Thus, the metal-insulator transition can be understood as a competition between paramagnetic Kondo insulator and all-in-all-out magnetically ordered insulating phases. We further demonstrate that within this state-of-the-art theoretical method, the insulating bulk pyrochlore iridates are topologically trivial. .
