Description
New routes to control magnetic properties of ferromagnetic membranes could consist in crafting the system curvature. Bending a membrane breaks the inversion symmetry: the convexity of the geometry allows for an unambiguous distinction between the top and bottom surface, which become the outer and inner surface of the segment of a closed surface. Exchange and dipolar fields are therefore modified when initial collinear magnetic moments belonging to a planar surface are deviated each other by the bended surface. Furthermore, the reduced symmetry and the resulting emerging internal fields combined with the notion in material science that a crystal's symmetry directly impacts the ferroic order of a material provide the ingredients to argue that bending a planar film might therefore change the magnetic ordering of the system[1]. This work is focused in ferromagnetic nanotubes that in relation to the planar counterpart, the finite curvature and their periodic axial boundary condition can be accounted as an external degree of freedom to tailor its magnetic properties, particularly, the precessional spin dynamics. In this sense, curvature-induced chiral effects in the spin-wave properties will be presented and some possible magnonic applications will be discussed. [1] R. Hertel, Curvature-Induced Magnetochirality, Spin 3(03), 1340009 (2003).
