- Description
- This series of lectures aims at Master‘s and PhD students in mathematics and offers a first glimpse into topics which are not routinely taught in our MSc/PhD programme. The emphasis is to introduce new concepts and techniques, and not to present full mathematical details. Closed surfaces are classified by combinatorial or topological data like the number of holes. The geometry of surfaces, e.g. their possible curvatures, is largely determined by their topology. The first significant results in the field date back to Felix Klein and Henri Poincare, with precursors by Leonhard Euler and Carl Friedrich Gauss. Since the 1970's there has been much progress in the study of the geometry and topology of surfaces by its relation to the physics of gauge theories. In this lecture series I will review some classical results and also point out directions of current research, ranging from combinatorial descriptions of surfaces to the analysis of gauge fields.
