- Description
- Dr. Hannah Böhrk, Dr. Isil Sakraker Hypersonic flight and atmospheric entry induce extreme aerodynamic heating and the exothermic chemical reactions at the vehicle body due to the gas-surface interactions. Advanced materials are needed to protect the vehicles from this harsh environment. A safe and efficient sizing of the thermal protection systems rely on accurate modeling of their response to the high enthalpy flow and the mechanical loads. It is our aim to develop a portable experimental facility allowing in-situ material measurements at flight relevant conditions using tomographic techniques, which would otherwise not be possible due to the size of the existing high enthalpy testing facilities and their power requirements.
