- Description
- The development of miniaturized electronic systems has stimulated the demand for miniaturized power sources that can be integrated into such systems. These micro-scale power sources are expected to provide enough energy with long time service and high density for energy autonomy applications such as wireless sensors, microelectromechanical system (MEMS) devices and radio frequency identification (RFID) [1], in which the power can be collected by energy harvesters from ambient environment (e.g. solar energy, mechanical energy, wind energy and thermal energy) [2], and stored in energy storage devices. Micro-batteries have been considered to be the main candidates [3], however, the application in above-mentioned applications are restricted by their flaws of short lifetime, low power density etc. As an alternative to batteries, micro-supercapacitors with high lifetimes and power densities have attracted a lot of attention recently [4]. On the other hand, the continuous downsizing of the miniaturized electronic systems for greater portability should be addressed [5]. Therefore, the reduction of footprint area for energy storage devices is also an essential objective in future.
