- Description
- Peter Stern heads the Immunology group at the Paterson Cancer Institute in Manchester. One focus of his lab is to understand the role of the 5T4 molecule in cancer and to develop cancer immunotherapies. 5T4 is a transmembrane protein, which is expressed in early mammalian embryogenesis, but whose expression is also strongly upregulated on many carcinomas, where it is associated with increased invasiveness and poorer clinical outcome. Thus, the Stern group is developing 5T4 vaccines and 5T4 antibody based cancer therapies. In addition, they study the biology of 5T4 in ES cells.
