 or cancer therapy\"

den\n Phone: \n Fax: \nDescription: Altered metabolism is a common featu
re of malignant tumors and associated stromal cells. Through induction of
robust glycolysis\, production of lactic acid is enhanced as is synthesis
of substrates supporting cell proliferation. To eliminate excess lactic ac
id\, cells express integral membrane proteins known as monocarboxylic acid
transporters. Specifically\, MCT1 and MCT4\, two members of the SLC16A fa
mily\, are induced several fold in cancer cells and often correlate with p
roliferation\, metastasis and poor patient prognosis. Therefore\, these tr
ansporters are targets for anticancer agents designed to block or disrupt
lactic acid transport and reduce cell growth and viability. Over 300 small
molecule inhibitors have been synthesized and evaluated in both in vitro
and in vivo tumor models to characterize their properties and potential us
 efulness in the cancer field.
