4.0 - The digitally enabled atom to system revolution
New materials ar
e the key drivers in the development of innovative products in the manufac
turing sector. It is estimated that today up to 70 percent of all new prod
ucts are based on new materials. For industry 4.0\, which is the close int
erlinking of production with the modern information and communication tech
nology\, the importance of materials will still rise. Materials should ena
ble future tailor-made products according to individual customer requireme
nts: on demand\, adaptive\, multifunctional\, by design as well as being p
roduced inexpensively\, with high quality and with short innovation cycles
. To create the digital fundament for materials\, the Fraunhofer Group Mat
erials has developed the concept of the Material Data Space®. The Materia
l Data Space® should provide digitally all the relevant information on pr
ocesses\, materials and components in a powerful and perspective company-w
ide platform\, and will allow developers and engineers\, to understand the
materials used in the respective development steps as variable systems wi
th adjustable properties and use. At the end of the development\, a produc
tion process could exist where work pieces and products autonomously move
through the production lines\, i.e.\, they interact directly with the manu
facturing and processing machinery and control their own process. In the l
ecture\, a short introduction to industry 4.0 is given\, a proposal for a
scientific road map to industry 4.0-ready materials is discussed and the o
pportunities for material-intensive businesses will be presented.
