- Description
- Active matter is made of constituents that are internally driven, for example, developing tissues or flocks of birds. Resulting from a tight coupling of chemical and mechanical degrees of freedom, these systems can show unusual phase transitions, self-organize into novel patterns, and raise fundamental issues of statistical physics. Different approaches ranging from agent-based models to purely phenomenological hydrodynamic descriptions have been developed to study active matter. The relations between them still remain poorly understood. The workshop will discuss most recent advances in these topics. The seminar will offer tutorial lectures by Igor Aronson and Jean-François Joanny to acquaint young researchers with techniques from different fields to study active matter. Simultaneously, plenty of time will be devoted for discussions and collaborations. A focus workshop on "Dynamic Organization and Motility of Single Cells" will be organized during the first seminar week (30 August - 01 September 2011) by Carsten Beta (Potsdam), Martin Falcke (Berlin) and Marcus Hauser (Magdeburg). Applications for participation and poster contributions are welcome and should be made by using the application form on the event's web page (please see URL below). The number of attendees is limited. The registration fee for the event is 120 Euro and should be paid by all attendees. Costs for accommodation and meals will be covered by the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems. Limited funding is available to partially cover travel expenses. Please note that childcare is available upon request.
