  the neuron as the elementary functional building block of the brain in th
 e late 19th century\, neuroscience has evolved fast to grow into one of th
 e most productive scientific research areas today. At a similar pace\, res
 earch on artificial intelligence and machine learning has grown to become 
 one of the main driving forces of technological innovation. From its early
  days on\, the neuron has inspired biologists and engineers equally and ne
 uroscience has emerged as a prime example of how technology and natural sc
 ience can profit from sharing knowledge. In this talk\, I will give a brie
 f historical review of the main discoveries in the research on biological 
 neurons and their technological counterparts from the past 130 years. In a
 ddition\, I will highlight some more recent discoveries in the field and p
 rovide a perspective on future developments.
