Abstract: High-dimensional dynamical systems arise in a number of scientific fields, including engineering, biology, and medicine. Mathematical models of such systems can provide mechanistic insight into their dynamical properties and be used to design effective control strategies. In most real-world control problems, both control energy and cost constraints play a significant role. Although such optimal control problems can be formulated within the framework of variational calculus, their solution for complex systems is often analytically and computationally intractable. In this talk, I will discuss different control problems with applications in, e.g., supply-chain management, power- grid optimization, and medical interventions, and ways to use artificial neural networks (ANNs) to learn near-optimal control functions. Different examples will illustrate that ANN controllers provide an effective and numerically stable tool to learn control solutions that are structurally similar to optimal ones.
Short bio: Lucas Böttcher received his PhD in computational physics and applied mathematics from ETH Zürich in 2018. Prior to his appointment at Frankfurt School, he worked as a Lecturer at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at ETH Zürich where he taught courses on Computational and Statistical Physics. In 2020, he joined the Departments of Computational Medicine and Mathematics at UCLA as a research scientist and fellow of the Swiss National Fund. Lucas has also worked in the private sector as a computational scientist in the Digital Solutions Group of the Leoni AG, a leading wire and cable manufacturer.
