Abstract: The field of asteroseismology — the study of the internal structures of stars through their global oscillations — has changed our way of looking at stars tremendously over the last decade or more. As a result of new space missions that obtain(ed) time series data of unprecedented precision, cadence and length, many oscillations in large numbers of stars have been revealed. Understanding these oscillations, in terms of the internal structures of the stars they belong to, is an ongoing effort. In this talk I will introduce the field of asteroseismology and present achievements so far and prospects for further understanding of stellar structures.
Short bio: Saskia Hekker started her career in astrophysics in Leiden, where she obtained her PhD in 2007. During her PhD she started working on oscillations in red-giant stars under supervision of Conny Aerts (KU Leuven, Kavli prize 2022). With the discovery of non-radial oscillation modes in these stars a whole new field emerged in which Saskia is still active. After postdocs in Brussels (Royal Observatory of Belgium), University of Birmingham, UK, Anton Pannenkoek Institute Amsterdam, Saskia became an independent research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Solar system research in Göttingen in 2013 and a professor at Heidelberg University in 2020. Saskia’s research has been funded by a Veni grant (dutch funding agency), an ERC starting grant, Max Planck Independent research group, Klaus Tschira Foundation and an ERC Consolidator grant. In 2015 Saskia received the MERAC prize for Observational Astronomy.
