SUMMARY:Barthélémy: Towards a Science of Cities
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Marc Barthélémy\, Dr. Martin Behnisch (IOER)\nInstit
ute of Speaker: Institute of Theoretical Physics (FR)\nTopics:\n\n Locatio
 n:\n Name: Online ()\n Street: \n City: \n Phone: \n Fax: \nDescrip
tion: Modelling the structure and evolution of cities is critical because
policy makers need robust theories and new paradigms for mitigating variou
s important problems such as air pollution\, congestion\, socio-spatial in
equalities\, etc. Fortunately and thanks to new technologies\, the increas
ed data available about urban systems opens the possibility of constructin
g a quantitative ‘science of cities’ with the aim of identifying and m
odelling essential phenomena. In this talk\, after a short introduction ab
out science and cities\, I will illustrate this new scientific approach in
spired by physics on various examples such as segregation in cities\, the
dynamics of urban populations\, or mobility in cities though car traffic a
nd the structure of subway networks. Input from the Leibniz Institute of E
cological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) by Dr. Martin Behnisch.
