Description
This lecture will focus on the synthesis and characterization of magnetic intermetallics, with particular emphasis on understanding how crystal structure influences magnetic properties in both rare-earth- and transition-metal-based systems. In our research, we bring together four interdisciplinary research groups with expertise in Inorganic Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Materials Science and Theoretical Physics, to address the outstanding challenges of developing sustainable and functional magnets that are crucial for an environment friendly electrified society and to enable power generation without greenhouse emission. We work according to a unique Earth governed design approach to find novel functional magnets without relying on toxic and environmentally polluting production methods. Specifically, we consider the precise chemical composition of rare-earth elements (REE) available in mixed form in individual Swedish mineral ores and aim to tailor functional magnets around precisely these compositions. Guided by a mineral specific REE-alloy composition, we aim to identify the optimal phase and the level of admixture between REE and 3d transition metals to find new and optimized functional magnets with significantly reduced environmental impact in their production.
