- Description
- Non-equilibrium dynamics in para- and ferromagnetic systems Uwe Bovensiepen Universität Duisburg-Essen, Fakultät für Physik und CENIDE, 47057 Duisburg, Germany External stimuli excite condensed matter into non-equilibrium states which are typically relaxing on ultrafast timescales due to thermalization and energy dissipation. Experimental access of such non-equilibrium situations is facilitated by pump-probe experiments which exploit femtosecond pulses directly in the time domain. Such experiments are performed table-top in university laboratories and at large scale user facilities like x-ray free electron lasers. The key to the desired microscopic understanding of non-equilibrium dynamics are multi-modal experimental concepts to distinguish excitations of the electron, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom and the energy transfer among them. In this talk (i) laser excited spin and charge currents in metallic Fe/Au heterostructures, (ii) finite size effects in the ultrafast demagnetization of Fe/MgO superlattices, and (iii) dynamics of the low- to high spin transition in spin crossover molecules will be discussed. Funding by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft through SFB 1242, FOR 5249 – QUAST, and EXC 2033 – RESOLV is gratefully acknowledged.
