- Description
- Forman’s Discrete Morse Theory is often a helpful tool for simplifying computations in topological data analysis. However, this simplification often relies on finding an acyclic partial matching of simplices, which is an NP-hard combinatorial problem. As such, an optimal Morse simplification is not practically attainable with combinatorial means. Nonetheless, we show that obtaining an optimal Morse simplification can be reduced to a linear algebra problem using homological perturbation theory. This talk features joint work with Álvaro Torras Casas and Ulrich Pennig in Computing Connection Matrices of Conley Complexes via Algebraic Morse Theory (https://arxiv.org/abs/2503.09301).
