- Description
Ecological networks – spatial connections of ecologically valuable landscapes – are becoming more and more important in times of increasing landscape fragmentation by traffic corridors, settlements and commercial areas. The general aim of the project TransEcoNet is to compile knowledge about ecological networks in Central Europe. It is implemented through the CENTRAL EUROPE Programme co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The project partners from Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Hungary and Slovenia have analysed and assessed ecological networks regarding their
· transboundary spatial connectivity and existing gaps;
· land use development since the end of the 18th century;
· landscape functionality and ecosystem services they provide to society and
· they have investigated existing national planning and implementation frameworks and international cooperation initiatives regarding ecological networks.
Another focus of the project is on the socio-cultural dimension of naturally valuable border landscapes and their history. Interviews with contemporary witnesses document perceptions of landscape change and life at and with the border during the last century. Last but not least, TransEcoNet strives for an improved public awareness on ecological networks and transboundary landscapes.The projects Final Symposium presents the results of more than three years of project work. It provides a transnational view on the development of ecological networks in Central Europe from spatial, ecological as well as from socio-cultural points of view. The event in English language provides an international environment for exchange of experiences and for discussions. Target groups of the symposium are actors from science and practice in the fields of nature conservation, landscape ecology, regional development, cultural history as well as of related disciplines.
Registration to the event is open until 16 March 2012.
