Description
Nanostructured magnetic materials with high perpendicular anisotropy are the key to future the success of the technologies that unpin almost every aspect of the modern information society. Whether intended as recording media for hard disk drives (HDD), MRAM memory cells, spin torque oscillators or nanowire devices, leading edge research is focussed on understanding the fundamental properties and manipulation of magnetic materials with perpendicular anisotropy. In this talk, I will give an overview of our work in creating and characterising nanostructured perpendicular magnetic thin films and, in particular, the scientific challenges encountered in creating magnetic media with ever greater areal density. Three potential schemes are currently under consideration to enable > 1Tbit/in2 recording; (i) conventional or not so conventional perpendicular media (ii) bit patterned media (BPM) and (iii) energy assisted recording. All of these schemes have some media requirements in common, in particular the necessity to understand and control anisotropy distributions and the need to engineer the relationship between magnetisation reversal and thermal stability. In our recent work we have explored reversal and thermal stability in exchange spring thin films using magnetometry, Hall effect measurements and neutron scattering. This work together with results on determining anisotropy distributions in BPM provide some insights into the critical issues needed to create > 1Tbit/in2 recording media. If time permits, I will also briefly describe our recent results on the magnetic properties of graphene.
