Description
Dispersion forces such as Casimir-Polder forces between atoms and macroscopic bodies arise as direct consequences of fluctuations of the quantized electromagnetic field. Within a dynamical approach to atom-surface interactions, based on macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, I will discuss Casimir-Polder forces between atoms and surfaces out of thermal equilibrium. I will show how transient repulsive forces emerge in the retarded limit, and discuss under which conditions Casimir-Polder forces can be entirely independent of temperature even for very large thermal photon numbers.
