- Description
- Virtualization consolidates multiple systems onto a single hardware platform to increase utilization and thereby saving energy, space and costs compared to single systems. Many embedded systems however, continue to use dedicated hardware to maintain isolation and real-time characteristics of multiple computing systems, for instance, in high-end mobile phones application cores are loosely coupled with a dedicated system for the modem side. In my thesis I investigate software architectures for the virtualization of timing-critical systems. The host system in such a setup has to ensure the real-time requirements of the virtualized subsystems and provide spatial and temporal isolation between them as well as secure communication channels between interacting subsystems. In my status talk, I will survey existing solutions for the virtualization of non-real-time and real-time systems, for isolation and security. I show that it is in general impossible to fully virtualize mixed-criticality systems without sacrificing utilization and present an infrastructure that allows for the integration of several real-time systems on a single platform.
