Description
The presentation will discuss the challenges that physicists are facing when making sense of the data coming out of the Large Hadron Collider, and the techniques used at the moment to cope with the data analyses. I will show using some concrete examples how we can manage to produce the first physics results out of data collected just a few weeks earlier. The talk will also show some relatively new technologies in computing which will become more and more important as the LHC will collect orders of magnitudes more data. These include multi-threaded computations on the upcoming Intel architectures, using GPUs in data processing, and making use of new programming languages aimed at making multi-threaded computations more accessible. I will show what projects are starting or running already in ATLAS to make use of these new techniques in the coming years.
