  in terms of a finite\, strongly interacting quantum mechanical system cou
 pled to a weakly interacting extended one\, where the former has a discret
 e spectrum\, while the latter is characterized by a continuum of energy le
 vels occur in many different areas of physics. These systems are commonly 
 called quantum impurity systems. Quite generally\, the dichotomy between l
 ocalized and extended states in these systems gives rise to a variety of p
 ossible behaviors and to highly non-trivial fixed points and rich universa
 l physics.  This international workshop will bring together researchers fr
 om a broad range of areas to which quantum impurity physics is essential. 
 It will cover the recent achievements and aims at generating a cross-ferti
 lization among the various fields. The workshop is preceded by an Advanced
  School that will be open to PhD students and young postdocs. During the s
 chool week\, leading experts will give introductory lectures to various th
 eoretical and experimental aspects pertinent to quantum impurity physics.
