- We discuss the physics of ultracold bosonic atoms interacting with the radiation field of a high-finesse resonator. We consider the spatial self-organization of the matter wave field, which is a non-equilibrium phase transition. We discuss how the damping of matter wave excitations due to atom-atom collisions is strongly influenced by the global coupling to the resonator field.
