- Description
- It would be useful to have analytical approaches to intermittent bursts which not only allow for time dependence and heavy tailed amplitudes, but also make contact with mature mathematics such as the theory of random fields and level crossings. We review one such result, the surplus run length ratio formula, and then show it applies surprisingly widely to highly skewed, heavy tailed and long range dependent models, as well as a non-Gaussian, correlated, space weather natural dataset. 1 MPIPKS, Dresden, Germany 2 CFSA, Physics, University of Warwick, Coventry, UK 3 MCT, Open University, Milton Keynes, UK 4 CATS, LSE, London, UK
