jacent to the nuclear envelope (NE). Most experiments have been conducted
with the human leukemia HL-60 cell line\, which can be differentiated in v
itro. The granulocyte forms exhibit ELCS (envelope-limited chromatin sheet
 s) connecting the nuclear lobes. Evidence is presented that ~10 nm chromat
in fibers adjacent to the NE are organized into a crisscross pattern that
resembles ~30 nm fibers. Epichromatin\, the surface chromatin\, in all the
HL-60 cell states has unique immunological properties that have been expl
oited for ChIP-Seq analyses. Epichromatin appears to be highly enriched in
retrotransposon Alu\, and exhibits spatial patterns that are chromosome s
pecific and independent of the state of cell differentiation.
