Description
We review recent progress in the thermodynamic description of far from equilibrium processes. We show how the Jarzynski equality (an exact extension of the second law to small nonequilibrium systems) can be generalized to the quantum realm. We further analyze the properties of the nonequilibrium work distribution for single and many particle systems and present an experimental scheme to measure it in ion traps. We finally discuss the notion of quantum speed limit and its consequence on the nonequilibrium entropy production rate.
