Description
Strong quantum confinement has led to the observation of discrete, atom-like energy levels in solid-state quantum dots (QDs). However, for a typical self-assembled QD the confinement potential of a particle spans more than 104 atoms. A natural expectation for such a mesoscopic system is that many-body interactions will dominate and lead to unwanted decoherence. Here I will provide an outlook towards realizing the ultimate, fundamental coherence limits for QDs based on a series of experiments which use a resonant laser probe the quantum states and their coherence in QDs, both for ultra-coherent single photon generation from two-level transitions and coherent spin-based three-level systems (so-called spin- systems). Further, I will present our approaches for efficient light extraction from QDs and precise tuning and engineering of the quantum properties to achieve a scalable platform which could be a valuable resource for future quantum technologies.
