Description: Femtochemistry concerns the ultrafast chemical dynamics initi
ated by ultrashort (femtosecond) laser pulses. The ultrashort laser pulse
creates a coherent excitation (a wave packet) in the molecular system and
the nuclei therefore start to move in an almost classical-like manner. Thi
s dynamics can be monitored in a pump-probe setup using either a second la
ser of by diffraction. In this seminar we will discuss basic issues regard
ing coherent excitation and the interpretation of experiments. We will pre
sent some of our results concerning the theoretical treatment of indirect
dissociation (resonances)\, ultrafast spectroscopy in liquids\, ultrafast
X-ray diffraction\, and the possibilities for wave-packet manipulation.
