- Description
- Produced in the Earth's environment during nuclear reactions between the energetic particles issued from cosmic radiation and the constituent atoms of this environment, some radioactive cosmogenic nuclides allow dating sedimentary deposits and buried artifacts. To achieve these datings, a specific method capable of isolating these rare radioactive cosmogenic nuclides has been developed. The technique of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) applied to paleoanthropology and prehistory has notably led to the dating of the fossil layer containing the skull of Sahelanthropus tchadensis (Toumai), to demonstrate the presence of Homo erectus in Turkey more than one million years ago and to evidence the final sealing of the Chauvet cave due to landslides at least 21,000 years ago.
