- The success of radiotherapy being the backbone approach of cancer treatment is often impeded by tumor radioresistance. Recent evidences suggest a small cell population called cancer stem cells (CSC), which is resistant to conventional therapy including radiotherapy leading to tumor recurrence. Our data suggest a combination of cancer stem cell markers for identification of radioresistant cell population. Irradiation of cancer cells increased the progenitor population that can be defined by classical stem cell markers including ALDH activity, CXCR4, CD133, ABCG2, and led to activation of PI3K/AKT and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) signaling pathways. Further aimed studies will explore the role of cancer progenitors in development of radioresistance and examine the predictive value of cancer stem cell markers on tumors radiocurability.
