- Beschreibung
- Feedback regulation is ubiquitous in nature, starting already at the molecular scale and extending all the way up often linking different scales. Biological systems utilise feedback regulation to let functions self-organise. Models of feedback regulation are inherently nonlinear and only fully disclose their secrets through bifurcation analysis. Typical system behaviours as a result of feedback regulation are (i) homeostasis, which I will illustrate with an example from growth factor signaling pathways that must not remain activated indefinitely or cause tumors otherwise [1], (ii) multistability, as it generates intracellular membrane identity [2], (iii) oscillations, as during vertebrate segmentation and (iv) complex behaviour en route to chaos like Calcium bursts that encode signals [3]. I'll close with an outlook on the spatio-temporal counterparts of the four types of behaviour. [1] Nakakuki et al.
